Womban Talk
“If I can’t get pregnant every couple years
to salt my feelings down,
I’ll just have to get drunk like a man.”
‘Eat bread and salt and speak the truth.’
Old wives of old salts, saints preserve us,
we salt fish: cod, mackerel, herring.
We are salt of the earth, earthy, salty,
with peppery female tongues.
‘When the salt has lost its savor,
with what shall it be salted?’
Salt tears, nor ocean deep,
will not wash away this woe.
