In Alpha Days

In the springtime of human-ness before ‘language’

we expressed our thanks and joy: loving/working, dancing, singing.

And restless in our resting,

we scratched with sticks in sand,

and pleased, we carved in stone with care:

the spiral of becoming

(ignorant of nebulae, nibbling fiddleheads, fiddling with our curls)

the wave of never-endingness

(our breath lapping at the shores of life)

the zigzag of lightning (O Sudden One!)

the vee of leafy growth,

circle and center breast,

the crescent curves of moons broken and mending.

We drew Renewal,

as we draw each breath, for life,

drawing strength from that!
